Passport's first album is a classic early 70s jazz-rock album that unfotunately has been overlooked because so many great jazz-rock albums came out during that period. There are some similarities to Soft Machine, but overall Passport is a little heavier and more intense than Soft Machine. There is also a lot of emphasis on sound effects and an overall very "spacey" sound. Although many tracks really rock out, there are also very mellow tracks with nice flute solos. Probably the most impressive feature of this album is the massive saxophone sound. Klaus Doldinger and Olaf Kubler double and triple track their saxophones to create huge unison lines somewhat similar to old King Crimson songs like "Pictures of a City". If you like early jazz-rock that is both psychedelic and energetic I would highly recommend this often ignored album. |
