℗ 1979
The first of three Concord LPs by this particular edition of the Quartet (with Jerry Bergonzi on tenor, Chris Brubeck doubling on electric bass and trombone, and drummer Butch Miles, whose successor would soon be Randy Jones), found Brubeck enthusiastically playing three of his originals along with the standards "Yesterdays," "Caravan" and "The Masquerade Is Over." Bergonzi's Coltrane-influenced tenor gave this unit a different sound than the earlier Quartets and meshes surprisingly well with the pianist/leader. — Scott Yanow. |
