℗ 1974
This is an 11-song compilation, five of whose songs come from Workingman's Dead or American Beauty. It presents a sampling of the Dead's 1967-1972 period, focusing on their more accessible material. In that sense, it is recommended to the uninitiated who want to get a feel for the group; not surprisingly, it is a perennial seller, turning up week after week on Billboard magazine's Top Pop Catalog chart. The initiated, however, despise it: In a survey of Deadheads conducted by DeadBase, it was rated above only Dylan & the Dead as the worst Grateful Dead album. |
