After amazing Instruments of Terror it was a bit hard for Laika & the Cosmonauts to do even better album. But they sure did get close: The Amazing Colossal Band has some fantastic songs and it absolutely has got hit potential. But the biggest failure is that Laika & the Cosmonauts offer themselves to much to the wider audience. That makes Amazing Colossal Band more enjoyable, but as it is for pop albums, the feeling doesn't last so long as you may wish. But, The Amazing Colossal Band is still a great album. Even though there are lots of material on one album, songs haven't lost their touch to quality. And what comes to the dynamic of Laika & the Cosmonauts' playing, you can tell that this band have the best musicians from whole Finland. And because Laika & the Cosmonauts are pure professionals in their job, they have remained the high artistic level in their music, even though The Amazing Colossal Band can be considered as party music to dance to. There's not much of sonical variety on the album: all songs are played on exactly same instruments. The intensity and the diversity in theme however keeps up the interest and Amazing Colossal Band is a fine follow-up for even better Instruments of Terror. — Antti J. Ravelin. |
