The Final Countdown

Europe • 1986 • The Final Countdown

The Final Countdown signalled a change in Europe's musical approach. Abandoning the strict heavy metal of the first two albums, Europe became a hard rock band with distinct art rock flourishes, as evidenced by the dominant keyboards. The Final Countdown was typically uneven, but the strong songs on the record were easily the best, most melodic they had ever written. That musical development was appreciated by the public — both the bombastic, keyboard-driven title song and the power ballad "Carrie" became hits. They were the two strongest songs on the record, but the rest of the album had occasional interesting moments, demonstrating that the musical change had been for the better. — Stephen Thomas Erlewine.
